Future-Proofing Patient Care: Hospital Zdraveto Enhances Data Protection with AWS Cloud Backup

Executive Summary

Hospital Zdraveto is a family-owned and operated healthcare facility and is committed to leveraging modern technologies and advanced procedures in patient care. Their management approaches Several Clouds seeking a cloud-based server backup solution. Their primary requirements includes robust security to ensure compliance with healthcare data regulations, cost-effectiveness, scalability to support future growth, and resilience against ransomware.

The Opportunity

Hospital Zdraveto relies on an on-premises server backup solution. They would like to further mitigate the risks of hardware failure, physical damage, and limited scalability. Their main requirement is to find an off-site, cloud-based backup system that could securely store disk-level server backups, while ensuring compliance, data integrity, and long-term accessibility.

Several Clouds’ Approach

The Several Clouds team analyzes the client's needs, data classification, security, and compliance, then implements a solution fulfilling the client’s Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO).

Several Clouds focuses on clients’ business-critical data, holding patients' and financial information. So, by working with the hospital’s IT and management, Several Clouds group their data into three categories:

  • Critical data
  • Important data
  • Non-essential data

This tiered approach reduces the volume of data sent to AWS, significantly lowering the overall cost while preserving business resilience.

Several Clouds implements AWS DataSync that allows to:

  • Automate and schedule data transfers from the on-premises backup to AWS Simple Storage Service (S3).
  • Optimize transfer speeds using built-in compression and parallelization.
  • Maintain data integrity with checksum verification.
  • Reduce operational overhead by eliminating the need for custom scripts or manual processes.

The on-premises backup solution uses an advanced mechanism with data partitioning (chunks). To ensure data consistency and ransomware resilience, Several Clouds develops a strategy to upload all chunks to S3, and enable S3 versioning to address the dynamic behaviour of these files. Additionally, the team implements an S3 Lifecycle Policy to keeping storage costs under control while still preserving the RTO and RPO requirements.

Results & Benefits

By implementing this solution, Hospital Zdraveto receives a new, cloud-based layer of backup protection that complements their existing on-premises system. The solution is secure, compliant, and provides seamless cloud integration of data backup and enhanced ransomware resilience for patients’ data, ensuring business continuity.
